Gabby is a brindlePlott Hound rescue with eyes set close together, blind in one eye, a small dent in her head that her dog mom believes may have happened at birth, and one slightly twisted leg that—according to Gabby—is not anyone’s business. It doesn’t slow her down. It just adds character. A lot of character. In the clip, her mom says, “Okay, Gabby, some people have been asking what tricks you can do. Should we show them?” There’s a pause. A moment. The energy of a talent show about to begin.

“Okay, Gabby, can you sit?”

Gabby sits.

She plants herself like she’s accepting a lifetime achievement award.

There is something about her expression. Intense. Focused. Slightly existential. Like she has seen things. My cat Meatball sometimes stares at me with that same “I know too much” face right before knocking something off a counter. Different delivery, same drama.

Also, I’m not saying Gabby deserves a trophy for sitting, but I am saying I would absolutely attend her ceremony. And bring her every treat I could carry.
