Just like little (human) kids, kittens tend to be extra mischievous when they’re very young—and extra against the idea of sleeping if it means they might miss out on some fun. Naps usually come easily to cats, but what happens when they’re worried they might sleep through playtime with their favorite human?
The sweet kitten in the video below is definitely trying to avoid FOMO at all costs by refusing to nap, but I have a feeling the sleep might win out this time.
This video shared by @sunkittencats on TikTok on Sunday, February 22, shows the cutest (and tiniest) kitten trying to avoid sleep at all costs. He’s doing his best to keep his eyes from closing, but they’re closing on him, anyway!
To be perfectly fair, it probably only helps that he’s snuggled up in what looks like a very cozy and fuzzy blanket. He’s making me want to drop everything and nap, too!

Though he’d probably feel a lot better if he got some sleep, he seems pretty determined to stay awake for as long as possible—even though that’s pretty much the opposite of what his body needs these days.
So, how much sleep does a kitten need in a day? The high number might surprise you! Per Chewy, healthy, growing kittens need nearly 22 hours of sleep per day, which amounts to 90% of their time. It seems like a lot, but it’s so needed; after all, their bodies are busy doing so many things to help them grow big and strong that they can easily tire out.
The site also notes that they will sleep less as they grow, and around the six-month mark, you’ll notice your kitten is sleeping about 16 to 20 hours a day. Still a lot, but not nearly as much as 22 out of 24 hours!
It’s OK for kittens to give in to the nap. They won’t need to take this many forever!
