Pet Safety When Wearing Costumes

With the holiday season in full swing, many people love dressing up their furry friends for parties, photos, or simply because they look adorable. Halloween may be over, but there are still plenty of chances to celebrate; who doesn’t want to see a dog dressed as a turkey, a pilgrim, an elf, or even Santa? Just remember, there are a few important things to keep in mind when it comes to putting clothes on your pup.

The most important thing to consider when dressing up your dog, no matter the occasion, is their comfort. If your pup resists when you gently try to put something on them, or panics once it’s on, it’s best to skip the outfit altogether.

If they wear the outfit without any issue, they still need to be able to move and behave just as they normally do. Make sure they are comfortable walking, breathing, eating, barking, and even going to the bathroom without help. If the clothing restricts any of these necessary activities, it’s not a safe choice for your pup.

If your dog isn’t a fan of wearing clothes, try something simple like a headband, bandana, or festive collar instead. That way, they can still look adorable and join in the fun without the stress or the risk of a meltdown.
