Rescuing any animal can require time, money, and lots of work from everyone involved, but giving that animal a better life is more than worth it. No two rescue stories look the same, which is why it’s so important that folks like the horse rescuers at @nwpa_equinesanctuary meet each animal where they’re at.
For Luna, that means lots of love and low-key moments of relaxation. After spending her entire life working hard on an Amish farm and being rescued from slaughter just in time, that’s the least she deserves. On March 16, the rescue horse spent the afternoon lying in the grass with her new mama, but the sweetest moment occurred when she finally felt safe enough to truly relax. Her whinny of contentment is everything!
It doesn’t take an equine expert to feel Luna’s relaxation. From the gentle way she lays her head down to that iconic whinny and sigh, every detail about this moment proves how safe she feels in her new home. I hope her mom takes this as the biggest compliment ever!

When horses whinny, they may be expressing curiosity, calling for another horse, or introducing themselves. Every horse has a distinct whinny, and the social sound is most often used among friends or new acquaintances. Using this logic, there’s no question Luna was trying to tell her mom something sweet!
Commenter @jeantaylorjewelry agrees, writing, “It sounded like she released years of pain and heartache in that moment!” Every working horse like Luna should get this kind of special treatment, but it shouldn’t take until the end of their life for them to experience true love and gentleness.
Rescuing Work Horses
Many viewers commiserated with the horse rescuer, especially those who have witnessed the poor conditions many work horses are in at the end of their careers. These majestic animals may be injured, underweight, and sold to slaughter in their advanced age, despite having many more years of love to give (and receive).
As Luna proves, however, rescued and retired work horses are some of the most gentle and grateful animals a person could meet. They may be nervous or need time to trust someone new, but these resilient animals will still make the most of every day in their safe, loving homes.
