140 Jacksonville dogs and cats receive free vet care at ACPS event

140 pets in Jacksonville are now set up for success following a community event at Animal Care and Protective Services.

Sunday morning, the city shelter invited owners for free pet vaccines, microchips, food, supplies and basic vet exams. The first walk-in patient of the event reportedly lined up at 4 a.m. for a spot.

The clinic was aimed at owners living in three Jacksonville zip codes identified as having the highest need.

“32204, 32208, 32209: those are our highest intakes that we see. But of course, there are other communities in the city that still have a need,” one event worker told First Coast News.

Stray or at-large pets made up nearly 65% of ACPS’ 7,900 intakes over the last 12 months, according to shelter reporting. The next most common reason for intake is the animal being surrendered by their owners.

By providing preventative exams and vaccines, pets may avoid illnesses that could severely strain owners in the future. Microchipping also helps reunite owners and their lost pets, reducing shelter intakes.

“We’re excited to be able to provide much-needed resources to help families keep their pets healthy and happy—and in loving homes where they belong,” ACPS wrote on social media. “THANK YOU everyone—can’t wait until next time!”

The vaccines were donated by Petco Love as part of its Vaccinated and Loved initiative. In February, the nonprofit held an event at the Jacksonville Humane Society where nearly 500 pets from across Northeast Florida were vaccinated and microchipped.

Targeted care for in-need communities across Jacksonville is also underway at EveryPet. The low-cost clinic on Norwood Avenue provides free spay and neuter surgeries and vaccines by appointment for dogs in certain zip codes through the Operation Big Fix program.
