The Dog Shop expands, moves to new Aberdeen location

Janet Wright relocated her business, The Dog Shop, at the end of January to a larger building within close proximity to its prior facility. Wright told the Aberdeen News that she had been looking for a larger space.

She has run the business since October 2017, after working as a veterinary technician for more than 24 years. The shop currently has three part-time employees and two contract workers. They perform work on cats and dogs, with a specific area set aside for cats, an additional benefit of the new building.

“When we went through it, I wanted a cat area, and this room will work perfectly,” Wright said. “We can do pretty much all of it in there.”

She enjoys being in charge of the operation.

“There’s something to be said for the success or failure being on you. If I fail or succeed, it’s on me,” Wright explained. “I like working with animals…I do like coming to work. I think that’s really important. There’s something to be said for that. It’s not boring or mundane because the animals bring variety and something different every day.”

The team is working on something for their old location, possibly “small pet animal oriented.” She says they are always adding to their products, including sheep and goat milk and working with skin restoration.

A native of northeast North Dakota, Wright has resided in the Aberdeen area for more than three decades.

“We have the best client base,” she said. “We are so fortunate. Our community really does support a lot of our small businesses. Without our community, we would be nothing. That is why we give our customers the best customer service that we can. That’s a key point of the shop…it’s always helpful to have great clients. They are the basis of your whole business. And we have them. They have shown me that over and over.”

The Dog Shop is open from 6:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. — or when the last animal is groomed — Monday through Friday. Winter hours often start a half hour later.

Its new location is 624 6th Ave. S.W. in Aberdeen. The business can be reached at 605-622-0364.
