Few dog breeds have had such a grip on the hearts of American dog-lovers like the Golden Retriever. This family-friendly dog, which has been one of the most popular breeds for years, is known for its generous spirit that’s as large as its big, goofy grin. Goldens are not only a pretty dog breed, but they are active, fun-loving and devoted, making them excellent pets.
But while Golden Retrievers are a beloved breed, many people aren’t aware that there are actually five different types of Golden Retrievers. It’s true! They come in a range of sizes and even colors, with different bloodlines that create slightly different looks. “The different types of Golden Retrievers are differentiated by small variations in their coat colors, coat textures and muscular builds,” says Julie Hunt, DVM, Embrace Pet Insurance veterinarian contributor. “They all have the same friendly and docile temperament, intelligence and trainability.”
While the American Kennel Club (AKC) lumps them all into one group, veterinarians say there are a few differences to be aware of if you’re looking to become a pet parent to a Retriever breed. English Golden Retriever

When it comes to the best Golden Retrievers, this one is up there. This Golden Retriever breed’s characteristics includes having a lighter coat and a slightly stockier build than other types, according to Abel Gonzalez, DVM, clinical director at Dutch. They also can be slightly shorter than other Goldens, per Hunt. “They’re known for calm, steady temperament, often a touch more laidback than their American counterparts,” Gonzalez says.
These Retrievers still need plenty of activity, but they tend to be great fits for families or comfort/therapy dog roles. Another difference? “English Golden Retrievers are rarer dog breeds, so they may be more expensive than the Canadian or American Goldens,” Hunt says. Overall, Gonzalez says these golden-coated pups tend to be calm, loyal and steady companions.

Another pet experts recommend is this cute Retriever breed, known for its fiery coloring. “Red Goldens have a deep mahogany coat and a sportier build, reflecting their roots as field retrievers,” Gonzalez says. This trustworthy dog tends to have more endurance and a higher drive than some other Golden Retrievers. As a result, Gonzalez reveals they love doing things like hiking, hunting or agility training. Talk about a fun, furry best friend to have!
“With enough activity and engagement, they make deeply loyal companions who thrive in adventurous households,” Gonzalez says. If this is your dream dog, keep in mind that Red Golden Retrievers are rare, making these pretty hard to find.

This type of Retriever is “sleek and athletic,” and tends to have a thinner, darker coat, according to Gonzalez. “They’re energetic and outgoing, thriving with plenty of outdoor activity,” he says. “This line also matures quickly, which makes them wonderful adventure partners, but sometimes they are less patient in early training.”
As far as looks go, Canadian Golden Retrievers tend to have less leg “feathers” and a thinner tail than other Golden Retriever breeds as well, Hunt says, adding, “They are taller than other Goldens too with a wider head shape as well.”
If you want a family pet, this is a great breed to consider and a classic dog breed all around. Gonzalez says this type of Golden will become the “go-getter” of your crew and that “they are full of life.”

This type of Golden Retriever has a slightly darker coat than others as it’s often a rich, golden color, according to Hunt. “Their coat is thick and dense, and they typically have heavy feathers on their legs,” she says. “Overall, the American Golden usually has a lighter build when compared to the English or Canadian Golden Retriever.”
Personality-wise, Gonzalez says this lovable breed is a very sweet dog and will be the “social butterflies of the bunch,” noting that they’re often friendly, athletic and happy to join the family for nearly every activity. “They’re a bit more energetic and playful than the English type, making them wonderful for active homes,” he adds.

Mini Golden Retriever

If you wished you could have a smaller version of a Golden Retriever, you can! They are called Mini Golden Retrievers and they are a mixed Retriever breed, often with a Cocker Spaniel or Poodle, Gonzalez says. This creates a “comfort Retriever” that offers the Golden’s signature personality, in a smaller package. “While often sweet and affectionate, their health and temperament can vary based on parent breeds, so choosing reputable breeders and focusing on socialization is essential,” he says.
So, how big are miniature Golden Retrievers? “This type of Golden is usually under 20 inches tall, and weighs between 30 and 50 pounds,” Hunt says.
That small stature means these pups are usually easy to hold. “Mini Goldens pack big hearts into smaller, cuddle-ready bodies,” Gonzalez adds.
