The Selkirk Rex is one of the four cat breeds born with naturally curly hair — yep, that isn’t a filter or a trick of the light. It’s a trait caused by a spontaneous genetic mutation that was first documented in Montana in 1986. Selkirk Rex’s that have curly coats can even have curled whiskers!

Not all kittens in a litter will necessarily have curly coats. Those who do will have it until about 16 weeks of age, then the coat begins to straighten. At somewhere between 8-10 months old, the kitten will begin to regain the curls, and they will increase in their intensity until the cat is around 2 years of age, when the final coat becomes set.

So, that’s why the second your brain is convinced you’re staring at a little lamb, you get hit with a tiny, adorable “meow” to confuse you even more. Only a breed this cool could pull off such a killer plot twist.
