What can (and can’t) you feed your pets on Thanksgiving?

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Thanksgiving is a delicious celebration for many, but some traditional favorites can pose a danger to pets.

Although it may be common to slip pets a bite to eat under the table, experts warn pet owners that certain human leftovers can be harmful to their furry friends.

“Pretty much every holiday is busy for veterinarians because so many pets have access to food they traditionally do not have,” said Suzie Chase, community affairs officer for Austin Pets Alive! (APA!) “We want to make sure that they stay safe.”

APA! and the Bluebonnet Animal Hospital say common unsafe foods for pets include, but are not limited to:

  • Any fatty or seasoned foods

For Thanksgiving in particular, Chase made an emphatic request of pet owners: “Make sure that you do not give your pets any turkey bones. That’s going to send them immediately to the veterinarian.”

If pets do consume human foods, Chase recommends keeping a close eye out for unusual behaviors and calling a veterinary clinic if you suspect your pet is getting sick.

Other safety tips

In addition to food safety, Chase also cautions pet owners about holiday gatherings.

“A lot of times, people are leaving their doors open and not shutting it behind them, and so it’s an easy thing for animals to go run outside,” she said.

To prevent losing your pet, she recommends getting them microchipped for easier tracking.

Many pets will also be home amidst high-traffic social gatherings. Chase recommends setting boundaries for your pet if needed, allowing them the space to rest after being introduced to so many new people.

Bluebonnet Animal Hospital also adds that seasonal allergies are in full swing for many animals. If pets are constantly licking their paws, scratching their ears, shaking their head or dealing with red, irritated skin, topical therapies like shampoos and mousses can help soothe skin.

For more severe cases, veterinarian-prescribed treatments may be necessary.
