For people who welcome a dog into the family, it’s more than just a pet. They’re part of the family. And, they are expensive members of the family.
While not as expensive as raising a child, which according to a Brookings Institute study from 2022 costs $310,605, pets are still pricey.
Comparethemarket.com looked into the cost of owning a dog and discovered which breads were the most expensive to own. The study took into account purchase/adoption cost and annual costs of food, insurance, veterinary care, grooming, training and accessories. They took the number and multiplied it by the lifespan of the dog – small dogs were expected to live 15 years, medium dogs were 13 years and large dogs were 10 years.

According to Comparethemarket.com, the most expensive dog to own is a Shiba Inu. The large, short-haired dog which lives around 10 years and has a total lifetime cost of $25,200. The top five least expensive pets are:

The French bulldog is the most expensive do to own. With an average purchase cost around $2,067.98 and average annual insurance costs of $1,300.13 over a 15-year lifespan, the dog ends up costing owners $40,720.
