Have you ever wanted to talk to your dog? Or at least have a better idea of what they need and want? We have as well. Unfortunately, while that’s not an option (yet), the next best option is word button mats. If you’ve never seen a word button mat (or even if you have), we suggest taking 80 seconds to watch this TikTok of a Bernese mountain dog using his talking buttons to communicate his feline sibling’s needs.
The video comes from creator @riggietheberner, and the caption explains what’s happening. “Riggie used his buttons again to alert us to Daphne’s needs,” the caption reads. “This time, he pressed KITTY and PLAY to tell us that she was hitting her toy and wanted us to play with her. This was another amazing demonstration of his ability to assess a situation and then communicate needs with his FluentPet buttons.”
Riggie Is Such a Good Boy
The video is mostly recorded using what appears to be a security camera. It starts with Riggie in a living room of a house while his humans eat in the other room. He hits the “kitty” button to alert his humans that something is up with Daphne the cat in the house. One of the humans stands up and walks over to see what is up with Daphne. “In the evenings, we play with her with this toy, and she goes over and starts batting it when she wants us to play,” the narration of the video explains.

Riggie has watched this occur many times, the woman narrating the video explains, and has learned the pattern. So Riggie starts to hit the “play” button on his word mat. “He took it upon himself to hit the ‘kitty’ and ‘play’ button when she was in the corner, hitting the toy with her paw,” the woman says in the narration.
And then Riggie gets some praise from his humans for being “such a good brother.” And then the woman starts to play with Daphne while Riggie sits next to her, looking very proud of himself for being such a good boy. And that’s how the video concludes! We love Bernese mountain dogs for their sweet, goofy, and sometimes obstinate, but always cute, behavior. Some of our favorite recent social media videos featuring Bernese mountain dogs include a Berner being a “good morning” greeter and a Berner being a backyard menace in the snow.
