Rare Pit Bull With Fluffiest Ears in All the Land Looks Out of a Storybook

Of all the different dog breeds, each one’s particular features are what make them instantly recognizable. For instance, it’s not difficult to spot a Dachshund by their long, low-to-the-ground body—unless they inherited a rare gene that gives them a little razzle-dazzle.

So if you think of a Pit Bull, you might not picture them with lots of hair, which is exactly what one such pup has. Mr. Mugen is an incredibly rare long-haired Pit Bull who resembles a cartoon character, mostly because the hair isn’t everywhere.

You have to see this beautiful boy to understand what this means!

In the video shared by @mrmugenofficial, this earth angel enjoys a day at the park, where he gives that slide a workout. As you can see, he’s not “long-haired” in the way other pups might be—it’s all in his ears!

The gene he inherited from his parents makes it look like Mr. Mugen has a super fly perm, pigtails, or a crimped hairstyle, which is truly unique. As explained in the comments of another clip, he’s a mix of “Pit and Blue Heeler,” but they’re waiting for DNA results to be sure.

How Rare Are Long-Haired Pit Bulls?

If the words “long-haired Pit Bull” have never crossed your mind until now, they’re out there, but they’re extremely rare. It all comes down to a specific recessive gene.

“Several genetic variants have been associated with long hair in dogs,” Dr. Jenna Dockweiler, a veterinary geneticist, said via Newsweek. “These are located in the FGF5 gene, which ordinarily tells the hair when to stop growing. When there is a variant within this gene, that signal is disrupted, allowing the hair to grow longer.”

How much hair, where it appears, and when the gene tells it to stop growing are all mysterious and cool, making some of the most incredible-looking dogs in the world.

Mr. Mugen Educates and Entertains

With so few of these long-haired pups in the public eye, Mr. Mugen is more than a sweetheart internet star—he’s changing the way we think of Pit Bulls and all the different ways they can look with the luck of parental genetics.

There are only a few notable long-haired Pit Bulls I’ve seen, and none of them have only super-fluffy ears like this cutie-pie. I guess you could say Mr. Mugen is doubly special!
