Regular customers aren’t unusual at fish markets, but one particular visitor is drawing a lot more attention than most.

A popular Reddit video posted in r/BeAmazed shows a massive sea lion making his daily appearance at a fish market, patiently waiting in front of the cutting table while workers prepare fresh fish.

According to the fishmonger in the video, this sea lion knows exactly how the system works.

“He’s the taster—look, look over there,” the worker says in Spanish as the camera pans down to reveal the sea lion sitting patiently near the table. Right on cue, the sea lion turns toward the camera and gives a look that can only be described as “puppy-dog eyes.”

The fishmonger continues explaining that the sea lion only likes the skins and is surprisingly polite about the whole arrangement. “He knows when it’s his turn,” the man says. “Even if you leave the fish here, he doesn’t take it. He knows what’s for him and what’s not.”

Internet Falls in Love With the Polite Sea Lion

The video quickly gained attention on Reddit, where viewers were delighted by the sea lion’s calm, well-mannered behavior.

“Polite, and quite photogenic,” one commenter wrote in the comment section.

A total unit, too. Love this. And how well he behaved is,” another person added.

One viewer joked that the animal didn’t seem like a beggar at all. “This clearly isn’t a beggar,” they wrote. “Just a gentleman picking up his daily lunch.”

Why the Sea Lion Loves Fish Skin

Interestingly, one viewer pointed out that the sea lion’s preference for fish skin actually makes a lot of sense.

“The skin actually has the most protein,” one commenter noted. “I saw a bear fishing salmon out of a stream and he was only eating the skin and forgoing the rest.”

Fish skin contains valuable fats and nutrients that many marine animals seek out in the wild, so the sea lion’s choice of snack might be more strategic than it appears.

Whether he’s there for the nutrition or simply the routine, one thing is clear: this enormous “regular customer” has found a pretty sweet lunch spot.

And judging by that patient behavior—and those unforgettable puppy-dog eyes—the fish market staff seem more than happy to keep their most polite guest coming back.
