Maine Coon Cat Nurses Newborn Puppy Back to Health With Lots of Milk and Love

When it comes to all things babies, mothers really do know best. No parent has every answer in the world, but moms’ strength and intuition are akin to superpowers. Whether it’s a mother duck making sure all her babies cross the street or a stray mama dog fighting to keep her puppies alive, there’s nothing a mom wouldn’t do for her little ones.

As one special Maine Coon cat proved, some moms will even go above and beyond for babies who aren’t even theirs. @Mossycottagemainecoons recently shared a heartwarming story of ‘CatDog,’ a tiny rescue puppy who had failed to thrive until she met the mama cat determined to nurse her back to health… literally!

Pass the tissues, please! CatDog was as tiny as a kitten when she first came home with her rescuer, but the generous Maine Coon queen knew exactly what to do. Her human mom may have had another plan, but the mama cat wasted no time taking matters into her own paws.

“She knew exactly what that baby needed,” agreed @elisejbrandt. “My Maine Coon mix is definitely a rescuer and momma cat to all baby animals and animals in need.” That’s so sweet! Some cats are naturally motherly and protective, but it was still a sweet surprise to see this feline mom take in a baby dog.

@Alicebuffalo said, “Awe. I’ve seen mama dogs feeding kittens, but not a cat mama feeding a puppy.” This may not be a common sight, but this Maine Coon queen isn’t the first cat to nurse a puppy, nor will she be the last. After all, love knows no species!

It was a massive relief to hear that the newborn puppy’s health had turned around, but it was even greater news to hear that she eventually found her forever home. As the cat breeder shared on Instagram, CatDog was adopted just after she turned 12 weeks old!

What is a Cat ‘Queen?’

If you assumed that the cat mama’s name was Queen, you’re not alone. That’s a perfectly regal name for such a beautiful cat!

In reality, though, a cat ‘queen’ is an unspayed female, specifically one who is pregnant or nursing. The word comes from the process of giving birth, called ‘queening,’ though cat lovers will agree it also describes the way every cat should be treated—especially one as thoughtful as the mama who helped to rescue CatDog.
