Heartbroken Golden Retriever Just Can’t Say Goodbye to Grandma

Golden Retrievers have earned the reputation of being terrific additions to any family. Rightly so—Goldens can form deep bonds with their humans and are known to give as much love as they receive. Warm, friendly, and affectionate, a Golden Retriever can feel like a loving best friend and a trusted companion. For one social media-savvy Golden Retriever named Wally, his connection to his extended family runs so deep that he’s heartbroken at the very thought of saying goodbye to Grandma.

In a completely heartwarming video shared to TikTok, Wally can be seen buckled into the passenger seat of his family’s SUV as Grandma bids him a fond farewell. With the window rolled all the way down, Wally laments saying goodbye and rests his head on the car door, ensuring she gives him plenty more hugs and kisses before his human mom puts the car in drive.

Wally’s exhausted from a day of swimming but clearly doesn’t want to leave Grandma’s house. It’s a good thing he’ll be back in a few days for an extended Grandma visit when his humans go away for the weekend.

Until then, Wally will clearly miss Grandma—and she’ll clearly miss him. The two share a special bond, which she charmingly notes when she whispers in Wally’s ear, “No one loves you like your Grandma. Don’t let them fool you.”

It’s a hilarious moment and a testament to the deep and loving bond between grandparents and kids—even when the “kid” is a crestfallen Golden Retriever.

Golden Retrievers and Their Deep Emotional Bonds

Loving and loyal Golden Retrievers can get emotional upon saying goodbye, just like humans. Goldens are such deeply loving pups that they’re prone to separation anxiety and can show their sadness through whining—or, like Wally, through sad expressions. Sometimes, a sad Golden will even try to block the path of their humans as they try to part company.

But one shouldn’t take a Golden’s heartbreak as a sign of doggy depression—it’s simply a sign of how deeply they love their human companions.

Wally’s human Grandma does a terrific job of easing the separation by offering a warm goodbye, but not a dramatic one. Just like a child, Wally’s learning that goodbyes can be tough—but they’re never forever. He’ll get to see Grandma again in just a few days.
